Los Angeles (in English: Los Angeles, pronounced IPA: [lɒs ændʒəˌləs]), officially City of Los Angeles and LA for short, is the most populous US state of California and the second most populous city in the United States: it according to the 2010 census, a population of 3,792,621 inhabitants. It is located in Southern California and covers an area of 1215 km².

The city is the center of the metropolitan statistical area of Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana and Greater Los Angeles, according to the census of 2010, totaling a population of 13 and 18 million, respectively. It is, therefore, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world and the second in the United States. The city is also the county seat of Los Angeles, one of the most populous counties and ethnically diverse country; the city of Los Angeles is recognized as one of the most diverse cities in the world. Its inhabitants are entitled to the "Angelenos / as" gentiliciio.

 Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781 by the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve with the name "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels River Portiuncula". In 1821, after the war of independence of Mexico, the city was integrated as part of Mexico, but in 1848, as a result of the US intervention in Mexico, Los Angeles and other California became part of the United States of America, according to what was agreed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city joined the Union as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California statehood reach the United States.

Los Angeles is a global city with great influence in areas as diverse as business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine or the investigation. In the city they are based renowned institutions covering various professional and cultural fields and is one of the most important economic engines in the United States. The combined statistical area of Los Angeles in 2008 totaled a gross regional product of USD 831 000 million, the third largest in the world after Tokyo and New York. Los Angeles, within which is Hollywood, is a world leader in creating television productions, video games, music and film to succeed worldwide. In addition, the city has hosted twice the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984.
